The BLC 6000: the platform that lets you keep pace

BLC 6000 Blades

BLC 6640 Trunking Gateway

Highlights

  • VoIP to PSTN trunking gateway
  • Provides GR-08 and GR-303 Class 5 digital switch interfaces
  • Uses MGCP to convert VoIP traffic to DS1 circuits
  • Can be used for standard T1 circuit emulation or DS1 service delivery
  • Supports cross-connect and transport of individual DS0s

The BLC 6640 Trunking Gateway blade provides GR-08 and GR-303 Class 5 digital switch interfaces for the BLC 6000 MSAP. These interfaces provide voice services and calling features from Class 5 switches to Occam POTS-equipped blades and optical network terminals.

The BLC 6640 blade uses MGCP, a widely deployed IP-based call control protocol, to convert VoIP traffic from the BLC-based network to traditional DS1 circuits with GR-08 or GR-303 signaling for connection to a Class 5 switch. TDM traffic from the Class 5 switch is converted to VoIP using G.711 PCM coding. Each blade has eight DS1 ports to interface with the local digital switch.

When configured as a GR-303 interface, a single BLC 6640 blade can be deployed as a single Interface Group (IG) of eight DS1 ports or as two IGs of four DS1 ports. Multiple BLC 6640 blades can be grouped into a single voice gateway capable of handling five fully loaded IGs to serve more than 10 thousand telephone subscribers.

The T1/DS1 ports are used primarily for the GR-08 or GR-303 Class 5 switch connections. However, as part of the overall versatility of the BLC system and depending on node configuration, the ports can be used for standard T1 circuit emulation or to facilitate DS0 service delivery to customers. The BLC 6640 can cross-connect and transport individual DS0s over a BLC 6000 IP network to deliver sparse special circuit services efficiently.

Common OS Enhances Blade Operation and Service Management

Like all BLC 6000 blades, the BLC 6640 features OccamOS, a common operating system that spans the entire range of BLC 6000 copper, Gigabit Ethernet and GPON products to provide consistent and uniform system and service attributes. This OS integrates a wide range of Occam copper and optical broadband technological advancements including the company’s patented IP Security Management (IPSM), which allows for dynamic, “hands free” network security.

OccamOS also offers excellent tools to identify and troubleshoot Internet, voice and IPTV delivery problems including a full set of notification events, statistics and service assurance tools that allows for dynamic monitoring of any IPTV stream at any point in the network. And Ethernet Protection Switching (EPS) delivers “five nines” network availability, flexible network topologies and use of all network bandwidth through traffic load balancing during normal operation.

Multiple Applications

The BLC 6640 Trunking Gateway blade delivers a wide range of applications, including:

  • Central Office Terminal for Class 5 switch
  • Multiple Gigabit Ethernet transport
  • T1/DS1 transport and services (Occam CES)
  • DS0 cross-connect for special circuits
  • Community organization and business Ethernet services: E-Line, E-LAN, transparent LAN service, SLA support
